Martin Constable: A Matter of Life and Death (2015)

Art Projects

The overlaying layers were intricately illustrated before being meticulously lined up on the transparent cover and opaque interior of the box, as well as the actual disk case carrying a copy of the footage.

Martin Constable used advanced 3d compositing technology to convert the panning opening sequence from “A Matter of Life and Death” (1946) into a single fixed camera looping sequence. The scene’s focal point was a fighter pilot’s desperate hails over the radio as his rapidly deteriorating fighter jet falls towards the ground, an event which leads to future struggles with celestial beings who determined his life and death. We took on the highly technical project with an equally elaborate acrylic box design printed with UV printing and laser etched details to depict the plane’s disintegration under enemy fire. The overlaying layers were intricately illustrated before being meticulously lined up on the transparent cover and opaque interior of the box, as well as the actual disk case carrying a copy of the footage. The various techniques used to print each individual element eventually produced vastly different textures on the final box and content.
