The Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) began in 1986 as a biennial event. Today, it is held annually and aims to catalyse dialogues between local literature in Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English, as well as writing in the global context. SWF 2014’s theme was “The Prospect of Beauty”, encapsulating humanity’s perpetual fascination with the language of beauty.
Each of the three booklet layouts embodies a distinct facet of beauty: namely, the Beauty of Nature, of Reading and Writing, and of the Soul. All three cover designs feature pages from novels folded into origami and positioned alongside ink splatters, pens and bookmarks. This interweaving of artefacts associated with reading and writing emphasises the sensuous pleasures of the two interrelated acts, both of which constitute the crux of literary meaning-making.
